American pop music icon Madonna on Monday held an audience with President Arthur Peter Mutharika at Kamuzu Palace where she among other things gave the Malawi leader a progress report on projects she is funding in the country.
On her trip to Malawi in November 2014 she was appointed by President Mutharika as Goodwill Ambassador for Child Welfare in Malawi. The ambassadorial appointment paved way for construction of a paediatric ward she started funding six months later at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.
The unit is expected to open in early 2017. This will be the first paediatric surgery and intensive care unit in Malawi, a development that will improve health service delivery to children in the country.
During the Monday meeting President Mutharika committed to support Madonna’s initiative which he believes will have an enormous impact on saving the lives of children as well as improving the health delivery services in the country.
The multi-platinum award-winning musician has for close to a decade been in close touch with Malawi since she adopted two children David and Mercy.
