Persons with disabilities lament exclusion in cabinet

Malawi Union of the Blind (MUB) has lamented lack of representation of persons with disabilities in the new cabinet.

The 31-member cabinet does not have any minister with disabilities and lacks a ministry which clearly states that it will oversee issues of persons with disabilities.

MUB Programs Officer Latimu Matenje said the move is discriminatory.

He said the development also undermines the rights of persons with disabilities in the country.

“It’s very unfortunate that persons with disabilities continue to be left out in various public services.”

Matenje therefore suggested the need for government to introduce a focal person that will carter for the needs of persons with disabilities.
