DPP withdraws from Bushiri’s release case

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has withdrawn from the unconditional release case of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary.

After Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Lilongwe unconditionally released the couple, the State appealed to the High Court seeking review on the matter and High Court Judge Fiona Mwale is yet to give her ruling.

However, before the ruling is given, the DPP Dr. Steven Kayuni has filed a notice of withdrawal.

Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs spokesperson Pilirani Masanjala said the decision to discontinue the case has been made considering that there is a warrant of arrest for the Bushiri’s by the South African government.

“The court will make its ruling on 22 December so we are just waiting for the decision of the court,” Masanjala.

Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) leader, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary controversially arrived in Malawi to seek refuge after facing alleged multiple death threats and what they described as unfair justice in South Africa.
