Police hunt for defilement suspect

Malawi Police Services (MPS) and other stakeholders are looking for a fugitive Pakistan national Mahomed Hannif who was being accused of defilement and corruption charges.

The 56 year old  escapee Hannif allegedly took advantage of a 14-year old girl and defiled her at Mudi in Blantyre in March last year.

It is however alleged that he absconded trial, a move that has forced police to issue another warrant of arrest.

In reaction, two human rights organization in Malawi including Malawi Human Rights Commission-MHRC and Centre for Human Rights Education Advice and Assistance-CHREAA have urged the public to report the matter to police or any of its offices should they learnt about his whereabouts.

The two organizations have also sent a strong warning to any person helping the fugitive that the law shall take its course on that particular person or group.

“Should anyone be found to be aiding the fugitive in any way shall face the arm of the law,” reads part of the statement.

Meanwhile, the organizations have called on the public to join hands in fighting against sexual violence.
