UN condemns killing of Malawian soldier in DRC

The United Nations (UN) has condemned the attack on the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) which has resulted in the death of one Malawian peacekeeper.

According to a statement signed by the spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric, deliberate attacks targeting peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under the international law.

Malawi Defense force soldier, Lance Corporal Chitenji Kamanga, 28, was killed On Monday when he Malawi Battalion base was attacked by unknown illegal armed group.

She was based at Malawi Maritime Force headquarters in Mangochi.

The United Nations Security Council has expressed deepest condolence to the bereaved family and Malawi as a whole.

The council says the peacekeeping mission is crucial as it fulfils its mandate of promoting peace and unity and has since vowed to investigate the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The remains of Lance Corporal Chitenji Kamanga will be repatriated to Malawi once all the UN procedures are completed.
