Court fines six for defying farm-gate regulations

The Dowa First Grade Magistrate’s Court on Monday fined six people for contravening farm-gate regulations.

State prosecutor Inspector Christopher Daluni told the court that the convicts Semu Tiyumbenawo, 49, Khefasi William, 21, Champion Samson, 27, Isaac Chisanga, 28, Andrew Nyirenda, 46 and Samuel Thokozani Stafuel, 26, were arrested for buying farm produce below government set up price and buying farm produce without licences.

First Grade Magistrate Amran Phiri sentenced four of them to pay fines of K80,000 each or in default serve six months in prison for buying produce below government set prices.

Phiri also ordered two of them to pay fines of K50,000 each or in default serve four months in prison for buying farm produce without licences.

The convicts have since paid the fines.
