Malawi government wants swift extradition of Chinese man accused of racism

Malawi’s government says it is still in talks with authorities in Zambia on possible extradition of a Chinese national Lu Ke, who is suspected to have been exploiting children.

According to Deputy Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Agnes Mkusa-Nkhoma, Malawi government is currently waiting for the Zambian government to extradite the Chinese national to Malawi.

She said: “We have one more witness then we will close this matter, this matter has been set for three days and we hoping that within these three days we will be able to gather some ground and proceed with the matter.”

Mkusa-Nkhoma has also called for diplomatic cooperation from the Chinese government in making sure that justice prevails on the matter.

“We are angry as Malawians and it’s our appeal to Chinese Government to come in and assist us in this process so that the fugitive offender should be extradited to Malawi,” Mkusa-Nkhoma said.

On Friday last week, the Chipata Resident Magistrate Court in Zambia fined the fugitive offender 13, 000 Zambian Kwacha (about 778, 190 Malawi Kwacha) for entering and staying in the country illegally.

The matter came on the limelight following an undercover BBC African Eye Documentary which exposed the suspect exploiting children at Njewa in Lilongwe by filming them making racist remarks about themselves, in Chinese phrases they did not understand.
