Activists call for Chakwera’s resignation

By Melody Chipoka

A grouping dubbed Human Rights Ambassadors has organised peaceful demonstrations in Lilongwe next Wednesday to force President Lazarus Chakwera to call for a referendum or resign for what it calls failure to govern the country.

One of the organizers, Kingsly Mpaso, said they have planned to present their letter to the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) rather than the District Council’s offices.

Mpaso said they believe that the President and his Vice President Saulos Chilima are leaders that listen to the citizenry and will humbly resign and if they cannot then they should a fresh mandate from Malawians.

He further said that if their demands are not met, they will hold vigils at the Capitol Hill and also in the streets until their voices are heard.

Mpaso also asked the Malawi Police Service to refrain from provoking protesters to avoid violence.
