Malawi records 19% drop in child offences

The Malawi Police Service has recorded a total of 405 cases involving children in conflict with the law during the first quarter of 2025—a 19 percent decrease compared to 501 cases registered during the same period in 2024.

Memory Mgeni, the South-West Region Community Policing Coordinator, attributed the decline to intensified awareness campaigns, increased police patrols, and improved visibility of law enforcement officers across communities.

“This reduction is a result of collective efforts in promoting child protection and ensuring our officers are more present and engaged in the communities,” Mgeni said.

She further noted that 70 percent of the children involved in these cases were street-connected, and emphasized the need for continued collaboration with social services and community leaders to support vulnerable youth.

Meanwhile, Amos Chibwana, a renowned child rights activist, has commended the police and key stakeholders for their role in protecting children.

“The progress is commendable, but more needs to be done,” Chibwana said. “

“We must strengthen partnerships between government, NGOs, and communities to provide long-term solutions for children at risk.”
