Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, who led the Roman Catholic Church until his death on Monday, April 21, 2025.
In a statement, President Chakwera described Pope Francis as a courageous leader who will be remembered for championing governance reforms and promoting global unity.
Chakwera, who met Pope Francis in August 2024, praised the Pope’s commitment to reform, noting that he led by example through the radical changes he championed within the Catholic Church.
Earlier this year, Pope Francis had been diagnosed with pneumonia and spent several weeks hospitalized before being discharged. He had since been gradually resuming his papal duties.
The Pope’s last public appearance was on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, at St. Peter’s Square, where he delivered his traditional message and blessing to the City of Rome and the world.
Russian President Vladimir Putin offered his sincere condolences, commending the Pontiff’s efforts to strengthen relations between the Russian Orthodox and Catholic Churches.
King Charles III of the United Kingdom, expressing deep sadness over the Pope’s passing, lauded his compassion, devotion to unity, and advocacy for environmental protection.
In the United States, the White House and President Donald Trump paid tribute on social media, writing: “Rest in Peace, Pope Francis,” and offered prayers for his soul and those who loved him.
