Government reaffirms commitment to disability rights

The Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare has emphasized that prioritizing disability rights is essential to building an inclusive society.

Chief Disability Affairs Officer Joshua Mkwehiwa made the remarks on Wednesday in Lilongwe during the launch of the Realization of the Africa Disability Protocol Project.

The initiative is being implemented by Sightsavers International in collaboration with the Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi (FEDOMA) and the Disability HIV and AIDS Trust (DHAT).

Speaking at the event, Sightsavers Malawi Country Director Bright Chiwaula reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to promoting the rights of people with disabilities.

He said the new project aims to ensure full participation, equal opportunities, and an end to discrimination against people with disabilities in Malawi.

FEDOMA Programs Manager Ethel Kachala also welcomed the initiative, noting that it will strengthen collaboration among stakeholders.

She said the project will enhance joint efforts to raise awareness on inclusion and disability rights across the country.
