Fresh calls for MEC chair to resign

A group of concerned citizens under the banner Citizens for Credible Elections has organized peaceful demonstrations to demand the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Anabel Ntalimanja and Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi.

The demonstrations, scheduled for June 26, will take place in Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu.

According to the grouping, the protest is meant to express the growing public distrust in the MEC ahead of the September 16 elections.

Speaking at a press briefing in Blantyre, one of the group’s leaders, Aida Mazinga, said the credibility of the MEC leadership is in question following the Commission’s refusal to allow agents of key electoral stakeholders to conduct an independent audit of election-related data stored in the Smartmatic system.

Mazinga emphasized that transparency and accountability are critical to restoring public confidence in the electoral process.
