President Lazarus Chakwera has announced the reconvening of the National Assembly on August 5, 2025, in response to an urgent constitutional matter related to the right to vote ahead of the upcoming general elections.
The decision, made under Section 67(4) of the Constitution of Malawi, follows the recent dissolution of Parliament on July 23, 2025.
According to a government notice issued on July 25, the President has summoned lawmakers to deliberate on the Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government (Amendment) Bill.
The proposed legislation seeks to address key electoral concerns and ensure compliance with Section 40(3) of the Constitution, which guarantees every eligible citizen the right to vote.
This extraordinary sitting comes just weeks before Malawians head to the polls on September 16, 2025.
