MPs ask government to assist disaster survivors

Members of Parliament (MPs) have called upon government to carry out a swift action in addressing devastating impacts of floods causing havoc across the country.

According to the lawmakers, most districts have been negatively impacted by the floods leaving others homeless.

In an interview, Salima Central lawmaker, Gerald Kapiseni Phiri, said authorities need to act with speed in addressing challenges caused by the floods.

Phiri said: “The issue of Salima disaster was just trending on social media but was not formally addressed in the House so on behalf of the people in Salima, I have brought it here to let the nation know the real status of affairs and that government should swiftly support the affected people.”

He said many people are homeless and without food and children are failing to go to school due to the destruction of school blocks.

Responding to call, Leader of the House Richard Chimwemwe Banda said government through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) is up and running towards ensuring that the said challenges are addressed.

“DoDMA officials are on the ground to ensure that all the affected areas are reached with assistance,” said Chimwendo.

He further admitted that government is aware that almost each and every sector in many districts have been affected and swift intervention is government’s priority.
