“Hands of speech” to bridge sign language communication gap

A 21-year-old final year student at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) who has developed gloves called Hands of Speech says the communication gap that persons with hearing impairment face prompted him to come up with this innovation.

Madalitso Mnduwira who is studying Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BIT), said the gloves that he has created are using artificial intelligence and translating to English language.

Mnduwira stated that he has plans expand the innovation so that persons with hearing impairment can access it easily adding that he will incorporate other local languages which include Chichewa and Tumbuka.

“I was doing research on barriers of communication, and I saw that persons with hearing impairment are neglected so that’s how I came up with this innovation I wanted to do something different,” he said.

Mnduwira nonetheless implored on government to embrace innovations to ensure Malawi advances technologically.

“I don’t think the government does much to uplift young people to advance their innovations but there are a lot of brilliant innovations that the youth have come up, that would really serve Malawi well if there we to be scaled up,” he said.
