The Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) has strongly condemned recent abduction attempts targeting children with albinism in Mwanza and Mulanje districts.
In a statement signed by APAM President Young Muhamba, the organization expressed deep concern over two separate incidents reported in the past week.
On April 18, a three-year-old boy with albinism, Foster Harry, was abducted in Mombe Village under Traditional Authority Nkanda in Mulanje District.
Just days earlier, on April 15, a one-year-and-three-months-old baby was reportedly abducted in Sembedzera Village under Traditional Authority Govati in Mwanza District. According to the statement, the suspect in the Mwanza incident is a Mozambican national.
Speaking to YFM, Muhamba revealed that these are the third such cases reported in 2024, highlighting an ongoing and serious threat to the lives and safety of persons with albinism in Malawi.
“These repeated incidents show that people with albinism continue to live in constant fear,” said Muhamba, urging authorities to take stronger measures to ensure their protection.
