NGO-GCN calls for greater action to uphold Beijing conference commitments

The NGO Gender Coordination Network (NGO-GCN) has called for further action to fully realize the commitments made at the Fourth United Nations Conference on Women, commonly known as the Beijing Conference, which took place thirty years ago.

Among the key pledges made during the 1995 conference, countries, including Malawi, committed to upholding the rights of women.

Speaking to YFM, Maggie Kathewera Banda, Chairperson of the NGO-GCN, acknowledged that Malawi has made significant strides in honoring these commitments.

Kathewera Banda highlighted the enactment of various laws, regulations, and policies aimed at protecting women’s rights.

However, she also pointed out that challenges such as gender-based violence and poverty continue to significantly impact many women across the country.
