Police have said a total of 25 road accidents during the 2025 Easter holiday period, marking a slight decline from the 30 incidents recorded over the same period in 2024.
However, despite the reduction in total accidents, the number of fatalities rose.
According to Superintendent Harry Namwaza, Deputy National Public Relations Officer, nine people lost their lives in this year’s accidents, up from six deaths reported during last year’s Easter holiday period.
Namwaza noted that the majority of the accidents occurred at night and were largely attributed to common traffic violations, including overloading, speeding, and drink-driving.
In response, the Malawi Police Service is urging all road users to strictly follow Road Traffic Rules and Regulations to help reduce the risk of preventable accidents.
