The Government of Malawi has said it is monitoring the recent decision by Tanzania to ban the export and transit of agricultural products to and through its territory.
This development follows a statement by Tanzanian Minister of Agriculture, Hussein Bashe, announcing that Malawi has been barred from exporting or transporting crops through Tanzania.
The move comes in apparent response to Malawi’s earlier decision to restrict the import of agricultural produce from Tanzania that is locally grown and readily available in Malawi, an effort aimed at boosting the domestic economy.
Speaking to YFM, Ministry of Trade spokesperson Patrick Botha said Malawi is currently withholding official comment on the matter.
He noted that the government is awaiting formal communication from Tanzanian authorities.
“Such issues are handled through diplomatic channels, and we cannot respond to reports circulating on social media,” Botha stated.
