Mzuzu citizens to protest use of Smartmatic

By Ishmael Chimwaza

A group of concerned citizens from Mzuzu is set to hold a peaceful protest on Tuesday, May 27, calling for the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja.

The protest stems from Mtalimanja’s decision to use Electoral Management Devices (EMDs) supplied by Smartmatic International in the upcoming September elections, a move the group claims could compromise the credibility of the electoral process.

In a statement signed by the group’s chairperson, Gomezgan Nkhoma, the protest was officially approved during a stakeholders’ meeting held on May 22, 2025.

Nkhoma said the march will commence at Katoto Secondary School, proceed through the Clock Tower roundabout, and conclude at the District Commissioner’s office, where the group will deliver a formal petition.

In earlier interviews, Mtalimanja emphasized that the electoral body stands resolute in its dedication to upholding the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability throughout the electoral process.
