Two children have died from rabies in Zomba over the past six months after being bitten by dogs, according to Mission Rabies Coordinator for Zomba, Chrispin Njala.
Njala made the disclosure during a media briefing on Thursday ahead of a citywide dog and cat vaccination campaign scheduled to run from May 31 to June 8, 2025.
He disclosed that in 2024, 7,321 dogs and cats were vaccinated in Zomba City as part of efforts to reduce rabies-related deaths.
In his remarks, Evans Kashoti, Youth Officer for Zomba City Council, urged residents to avoid keeping more than two dogs per household.
He warned that individuals found violating this regulation will face legal consequences.
The vaccination campaign is part of ongoing efforts by the city and its partners to eradicate rabies and promote public health.
