Mumba resigns from MCP NEC, cites focus on constituency

Minister of Trade and Industry Vitumbiko Mumba has announced his resignation from the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP), though he maintains that he remains a loyal member of the party.

Mumba made the announcement via his official Facebook page, stating that the move will allow him to concentrate on pressing matters, particularly his political work in Mzimba Central Constituency, where he is currently involved in a legal battle to represent the MCP.

“I no longer have time for petty, man-made political battles. Let those who enjoy that kind of primitive politics carry on with it. I will focus on serving my constituency,” Mumba wrote.

He also criticized the current composition of the NEC, alleging that over 80% of its co-opted members neither contested at the party’s convention nor paid the required nomination fees.

“Many of us paid high nomination fees and campaigned hard, but we were completely sidelined,” he added.

Despite stepping down from the committee, Mumba reiterated his commitment to the party and expressed continued support for President Lazarus Chakwera’s campaign.

The Malawi Congress Party has yet to release an official statement responding to Mumba’s resignation.
