ZCC urges residents to stop dumping waste into sewer system

By Temwa Tembo

Authorities have issued a warning to residents against depositing solid waste into the sewer system near Zomba Agriculture Office.

According to Zomba City Council spokesperson, Aubrey Moses, there has been a growing trend of irresponsible disposal of items such as plastic bottles, diapers, and fabric scraps.

Moses said this has resulted in frequent blockages and sewer spillages.

He noted that the sewer infrastructure is old and nearing the end of its functional lifespan, which further contributes to recurring breakdowns.

In response, the Council has deployed officers on the ground to manage the situation and prevent further damage.

However, reports indicate that a complete overhaul of the aging sewer system would require substantial investment running into billions.
