ZCC calls for stronger mandate to curb illegal mining

Zomba District Council (ZCC) says it is ready to take decisive action against illegal mining activities if granted sufficient authority to do so.

Speaking during a council meeting held on Monday, Michael Khwilipa, Chairperson of the Agriculture Committee, said that farming activities in some areas of the district are being severely disrupted due to uncontrolled and illegal mining operations.

Khwilipa warned that if the issue remains unaddressed, it could threaten food security and the livelihoods of many families who depend on agriculture.

In her remarks, Zomba District Commissioner Reinghard Chavula echoed these concerns, saying the council is struggling to respond effectively to the growing problem due to limited powers and enforcement capacity.

Chavula stressed the need for stronger legal backing and support from relevant authorities to deal with the situation decisively.
