President Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to gender equality, pledging continued collaboration with stakeholders to amplify women’s voices and ensure their full participation in national development.
Speaking at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Monday, during the presentation of the Women’s Manifesto by the Women’s Manifesto Movement, Chakwera emphasized the importance of supporting women in political leadership, especially ahead of the upcoming September 16 elections.
Chakwera reiterated his dedication to promoting equal representation in top decision-making positions, acknowledging the critical role women play in shaping Malawi’s future.
Gevelet Mzembe, Network Coordinator for the NGO Gender Coordination Network, called on the President to institutionalize special parliamentary seats for women should he secure victory in the polls.
She stressed that such measures are necessary to ensure women have a real and consistent voice in national affairs.
Mzembe also urged the government to strengthen mechanisms against domestic and political violence, and to establish a safe and enabling environment for female candidates during the campaign period.
She noted that safety and fair access to political platforms are essential for encouraging more women to participate in leadership roles.
