Chakwera unveils sovereign welfare fund

President Lazarus Chakwera has announced an ambitious plan to establish a Sovereign Welfare Fund, a long-term investment initiative designed to support future generations and promote youth financial independence.

Speaking in Mzimba on Tuesday during the official launch of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) 2025 campaign, Chakwera revealed that under the proposed initiative, every newborn will have K500,000 deposited into a personal account, accessible when they turn 18.

“Through earnings from exports and mining, my government will fund this initiative to ensure that no young person starts their adult life with nothing. This is how we invest in our future,” Chakwera said.

The President also outlined broader economic reforms focused on youth empowerment.

These include increased access to youth loans and expanded employment opportunities across key sectors.

Chakwera pledged to appoint at least four cabinet ministers under the age of 35 if re-elected, emphasizing his belief in young people’s potential to shape the nation.

“If we want this country to move forward, we must not be afraid to invest in future generations,” he concluded.
