NDP Leader Mwenifumbo rejoins presidential race

By Temwa Tembo

Leader of the National Development Party (NDP), Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo has named Dr. Chikondi Opportunity Mpokosa as his running mate for the upcoming September 16 presidential election.

He had recently announced his withdrawal from the race, citing an alliance between his party and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

However, Mwenifumbo has now reversed that decision, saying the alliance has failed to work as expected.

In his remarks, Mwenifumbo explained that the decision to contest again was driven by the breakdown of the alliance with DPP, noting that other parties within the coalition surprised him by submitting their nomination papers independently to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).

He said such actions signaled a lack of coordination and trust within the alliance, prompting NDP to return to the presidential race with its own ticket.
