Manepo raises concern over health worker transfers

By Peter Davieson

The Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organisations (MANEPO) has raised concern over disruptions in the delivery of services to the elderly, following the transfer of healthcare workers from various areas.

Speaking during a district executive committee (DEC) meeting on Tuesday, MANEPO Executive Director Andrew Kavala said the organisation struggles to fund training for new personnel every time medical officers and other health workers are transferred from their stations.

Kavala stressed that the transfers negatively impact the continuity and quality of services MANEPO provides to older persons in affected communities.

Responding during the same meeting, Zomba District Council’s Director of Planning and Development, Precious Kantsitsi, acknowledged the problem.

He emphasized the need for the council to develop a strategy to quickly replace transferred health workers to avoid further breakdown in elderly care services.
