President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has announced Vitumbiko Mumba, the current Minister of Trade and Industry, as his running mate in the upcoming general election scheduled for 16th September.
Speaking at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) after officially submitting his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), President Chakwera described Mumba’s selection as a strategic and unifying decision aimed at broadening electoral appeal and fostering national cohesion.
The President urged all Malawi Congress Party (MCP) members and supporters to remain peaceful, united, and respectful during the campaign period, stressing that internal harmony and civility across the political spectrum are essential for both electoral success and sustainable national development.
In his acceptance remarks, Vitumbiko Mumba expressed profound gratitude to President Chakwera for the confidence shown in his leadership, especially given the number of qualified individuals who were considered for the role.
He highlighted that his nomination symbolizes a commitment to youth inclusion and empowerment at the highest level of governance.
