Malawi records 11% drop in road accidents

The Malawi Police Service has reported a decline in road accidents, with 1,894 cases recorded between January and June 2025, compared to 2,124 cases during the same period in 2024—representing an 11 percent decrease.

According to a statement signed by National Police Spokesperson Peter Kalaya, of the 1,894 accidents reported this year, 411 were fatal, resulting in 464 deaths.

In contrast, 2024 saw 373 fatal accidents with 465 deaths recorded.

Kalaya further stated that 111 serious accidents occurred during the first half of 2025, leaving 201 people with serious injuries.

This compares to 113 serious accidents and 224 serious injuries in the same period last year.

The police have expressed satisfaction with the decline, attributing it to the effective implementation of traffic management strategies and the dedication of traffic officers in enforcing road safety laws.
