ACB arrests Masangwi over illegal logs export

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested Noel Masangwi, owner of Elvis Freight and Cargo Services Limited, on charges related to influencing public officials to abuse their powers for corrupt practices.

He has since been released on bail.

According to a statement released by the ACB signed by ACB’s Senior Public Relations Officer, Jacqueline Ngongondo, Masangwi is accused of illegally facilitating the export of prohibited Mukula logs in violation of the 2008 Ministry of Trade regulations.

Investigations launched by the Bureau in March revealed that Masangwi used his influence to assist in the release of four containers of Mukula logs that had been impounded along the Mchinji-Lilongwe Road in January 2015.

Further investigations indicated that Masangwi also directed government officials to issue five falsified export documents through his company, Elvis Freight and Cargo Services Limited, falsely claiming that the goods were legally cleared for export.

Masangwi appeared before court and has since been granted bail under the following conditions: payment of a K1 million bond, surrendering his travel documents to the court, and reporting to the ACB offices in Lilongwe every Friday evening.
