Misa Malawi condemns intimidation of journalists

MISA Malawi has strongly condemned the intimidation and heckling of journalists during President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s submission of nomination papers.

The incident took place on Wednesday, July 30, during a Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC)-sanctioned press briefing at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) Auditorium.

According to reports, some Malawi Congress Party (MCP) supporters disrupted the event by intimidating journalists who posed questions to Dr. Chakwera.

One journalist, Robert Edward of Luntha Television, had to be escorted out by a well-wisher after being followed and harassed by supporters while Dr. Chakwera was still responding to the media.

In a statement signed by MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga, the media watchdog described the conduct as “unfortunate in a democracy,” stating that such actions undermine press freedom and discourage journalists from asking critical, accountability-driven questions.

“MISA Malawi considers this behaviour a violation of media freedom and an infringement on the public’s right—especially that of the electorate—to access accurate and credible information ahead of the September 16 general elections,” the statement reads.

The organization has called on the leadership of the MCP, as well as all political parties and independent candidates, to hold their supporters accountable for any acts of intimidation or misconduct.

“Such barbaric behaviour not only infringes on fundamental freedoms but also tarnishes the image of the parties involved,” Matonga added.

MISA Malawi further urged all political leaders and supporters to ensure that journalists are able to cover electoral activities in safe and secure environments.

“Journalism is not a crime,” the statement concludes.
