Govt commits to expanding healthcare access

Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare by constructing more health facilities across the country.

She made the remarks on Sunday during the official opening of a newly built out-patient department (OPD) at Chamwavi Health Centre in Traditional Authority Chilowamatambe, Kasungu District.

The new OPD, constructed under the Health Infrastructure Rehabilitation Fund at a cost of K200 million, replaces an old and dilapidated structure.

Chiponda said the government’s goal is to ensure that no Malawian walks more than five kilometres to access health services.

“So far, we have constructed about 250 health posts nationwide, and we are continuing with the project,” said Chiponda.

Director of Health Services for Kasungu, Emmanuel Golombe, welcomed the development, stressing that improved infrastructure not only enhances service delivery but also restores dignity and privacy for patients.

“Communities are more likely to use health services when facilities offer a safe, clean, and private environment,” he said.

Kasungu District has received K3 billion in the 2022/23 financial year and K800 million in 2024/25 for health infrastructure projects under the same fund.
