An independent parliamentary candidate for Zomba-Chikomwe Chrissie Ganda has provided clean and safe water to over 15,000 people in the area of Group Village Head Muhiriri.
Speaking during the handover ceremony of the borehole, Ganda highlighted that for the past 12 years, residents in the area had been relying on unsafe water from open sources after their old borehole broke down.
She noted that this had put lives at risk due to waterborne diseases such as diarrhea.
Ganda pledged that if elected on September 16, she would ensure the installation of over 150 boreholes across the constituency to help address the persistent water challenges.
One of the community members, Fyness M’mwala, said the lack of clean water has caused many challenges, including straining family relationships.
She explained that many women spend long hours searching for water, often leading to conflicts within households.
M’mwala further added that the community will take responsibility for maintaining the new borehole by setting up a local committee to oversee sanitation and security at the water point.
