Zomba City Council assures residents of disaster preparedness

By Peter Davieson

Zomba City Council says it has adequate plans in place to respond to emergencies such as floods through various early warning systems designed to alert communities in disaster-prone areas.

Council spokesperson Aubrey Moses made the remarks in response to concerns following the theft of equipment installed along the Likangala River. The devices were part of an OXFAM-funded project meant to warn nearby residents of potential flooding.

According to Moses, the council is now working on establishing disaster risk management committees, distributing emergency tools such as mobile phones, and installing devices that can help detect and signal disaster-prone areas to ensure early response.

He added that the council is currently working with the police to investigate and track down the individuals responsible for stealing the equipment.
