Governance expert calls for special transition committee

Governance expert Mavuto Bamusi has called for the establishment of a special committee to oversee state affairs during periods of power vacuum that arise in the transition of government.

Bamusi made the remarks in light of reported cases of gross mismanagement in government, including the unprocedural extension and awarding of contracts, as well as abuse of office by some outgoing officials.

He further supported government’s decision to temporarily close the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF) offices amid reports that some individuals were tampering with loan files to conceal evidence.

“The idea to close NEEF at the moment is a good one, and I wish the same could have been extended to all statutory corporations, particularly those involved in external procurement such as NOCMA,” Bamusi said.

Earlier this week, President-elect Professor Peter Mutharika also warned against such malpractice during a press briefing, vowing to closely monitor and hold accountable those involved in corrupt dealings.
