Malawi to launch first-ever breast health guidelines by 2026

The Ministry of Health has announced plans to launch Malawi’s first-ever Breast Health Guidelines for Primary and Secondary Health Care Providers by early 2026, as part of efforts to combat the rising incidence of breast cancer in the country.

According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Adrian Chikumbe, the initiative comes as Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

He noted that breast cancer remains a major public health challenge in the country, with an estimated 1,600 new cases and 950 deaths recorded each year.

Speaking to YFM, Chikumbe said the guidelines aim to standardize the diagnosis, referral, and follow-up processes for breast health services across all levels of care.

He added that the document will also integrate Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) principles to ensure equitable access to screening and treatment for all.

Chikumbe encouraged women and girls to normalize self-breast examinations and undergo regular medical screening to promote early detection and effective treatment.
