MHRC calls for swift implementation of mental health act

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has urged the government and relevant stakeholders to accelerate the implementation of the Mental Health Act to enhance access to quality mental health services across the country.

The call comes as Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Mental Health Day, which this year is being observed under the theme “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.”

In a statement signed by MHRC Chairperson Chikondi Chijozi, the Commission emphasized that mental health is not a privilege but a fundamental human right, underscoring the need to safeguard people’s psychological well-being, particularly during crises and emergencies.

The Commission further called on policymakers, health institutions, and community leaders to prioritize mental health awareness, funding, and service delivery, noting that effective implementation of the Act will help address stigma and improve support for affected individuals and families.
