The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome (MLW) Research Programme has underscored the importance of accurate and impactful health reporting, emphasizing that journalists play a vital role in shaping public understanding of science and health issues.
Speaking during a training workshop for journalists held at MLW’s offices in Blantyre under the Journalists in Residence (JIR) Programme, MLW Communication and Media Engagement Coordinator, Luke Manja, said the initiative seeks to strengthen journalists’ capacity to produce well-researched, evidence-based stories that inform and influence public health outcomes.
“Accurate health reporting helps bridge the gap between science and the public, ensuring that people make informed decisions based on evidence,” Manja said.
The session featured interactive presentations and a guided tour of MLW’s research facilities, giving participants an opportunity to gain firsthand insight into the scientific work being conducted.
One of the participants, Noel Mkwaila, a journalist from Capital FM, expressed appreciation to MLW, describing the training as eye-opening and inspiring.
“The training has broadened my understanding of how to report on scientific and health-related issues more accurately,” he said.
