Police in Lilongwe have re-arrested 11 suspects linked to political violence that occurred ahead of the September 16 elections, this time on separate charges.
The development follows their release on bail by the Chief Resident Magistrate Court after a court appearance on Tuesday. However, the suspects were reportedly taken back into custody shortly after the session.
According to State Prosecutor Prescott Mwayiulipo, the 11 suspects — along with six others — have been arrested in connection with an incident that occurred in April 2024 at Mbowe Filling Station in Lilongwe, where a gang allegedly attacked members of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Mwayiulipo said all 17 suspects are expected to appear in court on Wednesday to answer the new charges.
Meanwhile, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Jessie Kabwila has described the arrests as politically motivated.
