The Department for Refugees (DFR) has reported a sharp increase in the number of refugees and asylum seekers at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District, with the population now exceeding 60,000 — far beyond the camp’s original capacity of 12,000.
According to Deputy Commissioner for Refugees, Ivy Chihana, the camp continues to receive between 200 and 250 asylum seekers every month, with over 243 new arrivals recorded in October alone.
Chihana noted that apart from funding constraints, the camp is also grappling with an increase in gender-based violence, robberies, and other social challenges.
She emphasized the urgent need for enhanced support from government and humanitarian partners to ensure the safety and well-being of refugees and host communities alike.
