Theft, vandalism delay opening of Dyeratu Market

By Temwa Tembo

The Chikwawa City Council has announced a delay in the official opening of the newly constructed Dyeratu Market following incidents of theft and vandalism involving electrical and water installations at the facility.

According to council official Steven Kanyerere, the stolen and damaged equipment has disrupted final preparations for the market’s commissioning.

He described the incidents as “regrettable and unacceptable.”

Meanwhile, Market Chairperson Dyson Zimora has commended the government for constructing the new market, saying it will significantly benefit local traders by improving trading conditions.

However, Zimora expressed concern that the available space at the new market is too limited to accommodate all vendors, calling on the authorities to consider an expansion plan to ensure inclusivity.
