Energy Minister Jean Mathanga says government is wooing Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to add significant power to the national grid.
Malawi’s total installed electricity capacity stands at 554.24 megawatts, of which 101 megawatts is from solar power, according to the Ministry of Energy.
Speaking on Monday during an official tour of Mulanje Hydropower Plant, Mathanga described the facility as one of Malawi’s key renewable energy assets.
General Manager for Mulanje Hydro Limited, Bridget Josephy, said the plant currently generates 8.2 megawatts, supplying power to 221 households.
