CAC urges safety of children during holidays

The Child Advocacy Centre (CAC) has urged parents and guardians to intensify efforts to protect children from abuse, sexual assault and preventable accidents during the festive season, a period when children are often exposed to heightened risks due to increased social activities and reduced supervision.

Speaking to YFM, CAC Executive Director Memory Chisenga said cases of child abuse and exploitation tend to rise during the holidays as families gather, travel and host visitors, sometimes leaving children in unsafe environments.

Chisenga also cautioned against negligence that can lead to serious injuries or loss of life, noting that drowning incidents in lakes and rivers are common during the festive period.

She stressed that parents and guardians must ensure children are properly supervised at all times and that safety measures are strictly observed, particularly when visiting water bodies.

Chisenga has since appealed to communities, traditional leaders and relevant authorities to work collaboratively in safeguarding children, emphasizing that celebrations should not come at the expense of children’s safety and wellbeing.
