Zomba chief decries delayed bridge rehabilitation

By John Tewesa

Traditional Authority (TA) Nkapita of Zomba District has expressed concern over delays in the rehabilitation of the Linthipe Bridge, which was washed away by heavy rains earlier this year.

The chief said the absence of the bridge has severely disrupted essential services, including education, health and trade, especially during the rainy season.

He added that the distribution of subsidised farm inputs has also been badly affected, as heavy vehicles are unable to access the other side of the river.

According to TA Nkapita, the situation is putting farmers’ lives at risk, as they are forced to cross the river on foot through flowing water.

The traditional leader has since appealed to relevant authorities to act swiftly and restore the bridge.

Meanwhile, Zomba District Council Director of Public Works, Henry Mwamvani, requested more time before commenting on the matter. By the time of going to press, he had not yet responded.
