Expert calls for early preparations ahead of second term

By Temwa Tembo

An education expert, Island Mtambo, has urged schools across the country to make thorough preparations ahead of the second term, warning that inadequate planning could disrupt learning.

Speaking to YFM, Mtambo said early preparedness is key to ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted academic term.

Reflecting on the previous academic calendar, Mtambo noted that several schools were forced to close following student protests and demonstrations, some of which resulted in the vandalism of school property.

He attributed the unrest to poor diets and inadequate learner welfare, particularly in boarding schools.

Mtambo stressed that school authorities must prioritise proper feeding programmes and improve the general welfare of learners to prevent a repeat of such disruptions.

He also cautioned parents against excessive spending during the festive season, urging them to instead set aside resources for school requirements.

At the same time, learners have been advised to exercise discipline and patience, with Mtambo reminding them that dialogue is a better way of resolving grievances than engaging in destructive behaviour.

The second term academic calendar is scheduled to begin on 5 January and will run for 13 weeks, ending on 2 April 2026.
