Knowledge gap on internet laws fuelling online crimes – CCDO

The existence of a knowledge gap on laws governing the use of the internet has been described as one of the major drivers of online crimes in Malawi.

This was revealed on Wednesday in Liwonde during a two-day training workshop on Digital Literacy, Security and Online Legal Frameworks, which brought together journalists and civil society actors from the Southern and Eastern regions of the country.

Executive Director for Chipembere Community Development Organization (CCDO), Dalitso Chiwayula, said there is need to intensify public awareness on Malawi’s online regulatory and legal frameworks in order to create a safe and responsible digital space.

Chiwayula noted that many internet users commit offences unknowingly due to limited understanding of digital rights, responsibilities and existing cyber laws.

During the training, participants were equipped with knowledge and skills on enhancing digital literacy and responsibility, strengthening online safety, as well as addressing misinformation, disinformation and other online threats.

The training forms part of the My Democracy: My Digital Rights Campaign, which is being implemented by CCDO in partnership with Umunthu Plus and Umunthu FM, with support from CIVICUS.
