Careless disposal of waste into rivers in Zomba City has reached alarming levels, posing environmental and health risks to residents.
YFM has uncovered widespread pollution in the Likangala, M’ponda and Mulunguzi rivers, where garbage —including bottles and used pampers—is being dumped indiscriminately into the waterways.
One resident, Yunisi Masitala, said the thought of consuming contaminated water is frightening for many families who depend on the rivers for daily use.
Zomba City Council Public Relations Officer, Aubrey Moses, acknowledged the challenge, saying the council will work closely with waste management committees to raise awareness on proper waste management practices and enforce community waste management by-laws.
Meanwhile, public health expert Dorothy Ngoma called for tougher measures, urging government to put in place stricter laws and ensure their enforcement to curb irresponsible waste disposal and safeguard public health.
However, president of the Association of Environmental Journalists (AEJ), Titus Linzie, said the problem goes beyond enforcement, stressing the need for a change in mindset among residents.
He urged citizens to take responsibility for protecting the environment in which they live.
