ZCC targets planting 40,000 trees by 2027

Zomba City Council (ZCC) has announced plans to plant a large number of trees in the 2026/2027 forestry season in an effort to increase the survival rate of trees within the city.

Speaking to YFM, Zomba City Mayor Christopher Jana said the Council is targeting to plant about 40,000 trees, with an expectation that between 80 and 90 percent of them will survive.

Jana also disclosed that during last year’s tree-planting season, the Council managed to plant only 7,500 trees, of which about 65 percent survived.

He added that tree planting is critical in protecting the environment, addressing challenges brought about by climate change, and conserving water sources within the city.

Jana has further issued a stern warning to anyone found cutting down trees without authorisation, saying offenders will face tough penalties in accordance with the law.
