Zomba Malosa Member of Parliament (MP) Grace Kwelepeta has expressed commitment to improving academic performance among both teachers and learners in her constituency.
Kwelepeta made the remarks when she awarded Standard Eight teachers from Songani and Mchengawedi zones whose learners attained Grade A results in the recently released Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations.
“As we advocate for quality education for our learners, we must also consider what motivates teachers to dedicate themselves to their work,” said Kwelepeta.
“My goal is to ensure that schools in my constituency produce top-performing students who can compete at both district and national levels.”
Speaking earlier, Primary Education Advisor (PEA) for Songani Zone, Memory Makiyi, said the “Buy Grade A Initiative” introduced by the parliamentarian is making a positive impact on learner performance in both Songani and Mchengawedi zones.
Makiyi said during the most recent PSLCE results, schools from the two zones recorded a combined total of 1,500 Grade A passes across all subjects.
Under the initiative, Kwelepeta rewards teachers with K2,000 for each Grade A obtained by learners in the subjects they teach.
As a result, she spent a total of K3 million, with the money paid directly to individual teachers.
The Buy Grade A Initiative is an education support programme aimed at motivating Standard Eight teachers by rewarding them for each Grade A achieved by their learners in national examinations.
